addressing climate change

We believe climate change is real and human activity contributes to it. We take prudent and cost-effective actions to manage climate change business risks, pursue opportunities to lower our emissions and develop lower-carbon energy. Managing climate change risks is an important element of our strategic focus to return superior value to stockholders. We believe Chevron’s governance, risk management and strategy processes mitigate risk and capture low-carbon business opportunities associated with climate change. We share the concerns of governments and the public about climate change and recognize the ?ndings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that the use of fossil fuels contributes to increases in global temperatures. We see the Paris Agreement as a step forward to meeting this global challenge.

operational excellence

We instill a culture of operational excellence (OE) that places the highest priority on the safety and health of our workforce and on the protection of communities, the environment and our assets. We are committed to continually improving our environmental performance and reducing the potential impacts of our operations through the implementation of our Operational Excellence Management System.

our systematic approach to environmental management

The environment is one of the six focus areas of our Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS), which puts into action our Chevron Way value to protect people and the environment. The OE objective for the Environment Focus Area establishes the priority for our global operations to assess and manage their significant environmental risks across the life of our assets.

learn more about our OEMS expectations

To drive consistency in meeting our Environment Focus Area expectations, we have an Environmental Stewardship (ES) process. The ES process directs our businesses to create an inventory of how their activities interact with the environment. These environmental aspects and their related potential impacts are then used to identify, assess and prioritize environmental risk and improvement opportunities.
In addition to our ES process, we have an Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) process. Our ESHIA process is designed to consistently identify and address potentially significant project-related environmental, social and health impacts. Since its inception in 2007, we have used our ESHIA process in the planning and implementation for capital projects worldwide.

Chevron has nine environmental standards, which apply a consistent level of rigor in managing the environmental aspects of our business. The corporate standards include Third-Party Waste Stewardship, Site Residual Impact Management and Health, Environment and Safety Property Transfer.

We also have six Upstream-specific environmental performance standards (EPSs) for managing air emissions, flaring and venting, natural resources (including water and land use), offshore drilling fluids and cuttings, produced water and waste management. These EPSs are applied across our Upstream business and capital projects and provide uniform standards and operating practices.

Each year, we highlight key actions that re?ect our company's values and demonstrate our commitment to long-term sustainability.
